Look up in Novi Sad and, sooner or later, you’ll find him. Mercury stands on rooftops across the old town: copper, weathered, patient, the messenger god cast above the shopfronts and merchant houses of a city built on trade. Ask a guide why he’s there and the answer is always the same. Mercury, patron of commerce, watching over the merchants below. It’s the correct answer. It’s also, we think, only half of one.
Follow the Danube downstream from Novi Sad, toward Belgrade, and the river takes you to a low mound on its right bank called Vinča. It doesn’t look like much. What’s underneath it changes the picture considerably.
It isn’t the only place on this river that does. Further downstream, in the Iron Gates gorge, a site called Lepenski Vir was already settled a thousand years before Vinča even began, with planned houses, monumental stone carvings, and its own set of incised symbols that nobody has ever managed to read either. One extraordinary Danube settlement might be a curiosity. Two, with their own separate unexplained symbol traditions, starts to look like a pattern.
A Culture That Kept Records

The site was discovered in 1905 and formally excavated from 1908 by Miloje Vasić, the first academically trained archaeologist in Serbia, work that continued in stages through 1934 and resumed under modern teams in 1998. Excavations there have uncovered ten metres of continuous cultural deposit spanning roughly 5700 to 4500 BC, one of the longest, richest Neolithic sequences in Europe. Related symbol-bearing sites have since turned up across Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary. Thousands of artefacts carry them: pottery, spindle whorls, figurines, tools. Spirals, grids, crosses, and abstract signs recur with a regularity that looks, to more than a few archaeologists, less like decoration and more like a system.
The Tărtăria Tablets
In 1961, at a Neolithic site near the Romanian village of Tărtăria, an archaeologist named Nicolae Vlassa found three small clay tablets bearing this same family of signs, buried in a pit alongside charred human bone. Two of the tablets are rectangular, one round, and the marks on them combine pictorial elements, a horned animal, a figure, a tree branch, with rows of abstract characters that stand apart from anything decorative found elsewhere on Vinča pottery. Organic material recovered from the same context has placed the find at roughly 5300 to 5500 BC.

Sit with that figure for a moment. Sumerian cuneiform, the script every schoolbook credits as the world’s oldest writing, emerges from the archaeological record around 3200 BC. If the Tărtăria dating holds and if the tablets record language rather than ritual marks without linguistic content, they would place a structured symbolic system in the Danube basin more than a thousand years before Uruk, and considerably longer before the Sumerians had cause to write anything down at all.
We want to hold that “if” exactly where it belongs, because this is a genuinely contested question in the scholarly literature, not a settled fact dressed up as one. The excavation record from 1961 is not detailed enough to fully rule out disturbance of the pit, and the dates rest on charcoal found nearby rather than on the tablets themselves. The signs remain undeciphered. Comparisons drawn between individual Vinča characters and early Uruk pictographs have been made, but the overlap is partial at best, and geometric shapes, crosses, circles, grids, appear independently in symbolic traditions worldwide without implying any contact between them. Most cautious scholarship treats the material as proto-writing at most: a structured use of marks that may have recorded identity, ownership, ritual information, or quantity, without necessarily encoding spoken language the way cuneiform eventually did.
What isn’t contested is the scale and consistency of the practice itself. This wasn’t one culture producing one curious artefact. It was hundreds of sites, thousands of objects, and a sign repertoire disciplined enough that specialists have been able to catalogue it, sign by sign, for over a century. Whatever the Vinča symbols were for, the people who made them were keeping records, and keeping them the same way, over a very wide territory, for a very long time.
The Ore Buried Alongside It

Copper, Tin, and the Oldest Axe in Europe
The same culture that produced this record-keeping tradition was also, independently, at the leading edge of European metallurgy. Not far off, at a site called Belovode, archaeologists found what’s currently the earliest confirmed copper smelting on the continent, dated to roughly 5000 BC. A few hundred kilometres south, at Pločnik, a copper axe recovered in 2008 was placed at 5500 BC, pushing the accepted start of Europe’s Copper Age back by half a millennium.
The design hasn’t moved as far as you’d expect in seven and a half thousand years. A head cast in metal, a hole through the body for a wooden haft, weight carried along the shaft rather than in the swing of an arm alone. That basic architecture, worked out this early, is still recognisably the shape of an axe today.

The same site also produced the world’s oldest known tin bronze, a foil dated to roughly 4650 BC, produced independently in the Balkans over a thousand years before comparable tin bronze appears in the Near East. Serbia had its own tin as well, placer deposits on Mount Cer in the west of the country, worked into the Bronze Age that followed.
The Cinnabar Question
And buried in the same layers as the symbols and the smelting: cinnabar. The bright red mercury ore, worked and applied as pigment, confirmed by modern spectroscopic analysis across multiple Vinča sites, extending the known record of cinnabar use in the Balkans back to the end of the sixth millennium BC.
Vasić went further than pigment. Examining kiln structures at Vinča, domed, with slanted floors sloping toward the opening, he argued the inhabitants weren’t only grinding cinnabar for colour but heating it to drive off and condense actual liquid mercury, the same basic principle later cultures would use deliberately for the same purpose. It’s a real, published hypothesis from the site’s original excavator, resting on physical structures still standing to be examined. Vasić’s own record isn’t spotless.Later archival work has noted that his methods reflect the excavation standards of his time, not those of today. Even so, the kilns are there, and their shape is something anyone can check for themselves.

A more recent study tested his claim directly, scanning samples taken from the kiln floors for mercury residue. It found none. Left there, that reads as a clean rebuttal. But look at what was actually being searched for, and where. Mercury boils at 356°C, well inside the range of a working kiln, and a successful extraction is precisely a process in which the mercury doesn’t stay behind. It leaves as vapour, is condensed, and is carried away. Scanning the kiln floor for leftover mercury metal is closer to checking a still for whisky after the bottle’s already left the room. It’s not the wrong instrument. It’s the wrong place to point it.
The argument over methodology will likely run for years yet. What we can say is this: a people already melting copper, who understood heat and its behaviour well enough to smelt ore, would have known that some substances vanish under fire and leave something else behind in the air around them. Whether they harnessed that on purpose is not something we’re settling here. The kilns are shaped the way they’re shaped. The question was raised independently, by the man who dug the site, on the evidence in front of him. We’re simply not going to pretend the negative test closed it.
Copper. Tin. Cinnabar, possibly refined into mercury metal. A record-keeping system that may or may not be the oldest writing on Earth. All in the same culture, on the same river, at the dawn of European metallurgy.
Novi Sad’s Own Ground
None of this sits at a comfortable distance from Novi Sad either. In 2011, road works on the city’s own northwestern edge, cutting a bypass toward the E75, uncovered a Vinča burial ground at a site now called Sajlovo 5. Further out, on the Sava at Hrtkovci in Srem, the same stretch of country that supplies Novi Sad’s wider region, sits Gomolava, one of the most thoroughly excavated Vinča sites in Europe: a Neolithic cemetery yielding copper grave goods, and a two-headed clay figurine, dated to roughly 4700 BC, unlike almost anything else the culture produced.
And Novi Sad sits in the shadow of Petrovaradin, one of the most heavily fortified river positions in Europe, a star fort built to hold this exact stretch of the Danube against everyone who ever wanted it. We’re not claiming its builders knew what lay in the ground around them, they didn’t need to. We’re only pointing out that whoever has held this bend in the river, across seven thousand years, has always had a reason to hold it tightly.
The Next Element

Seven thousand years on, the same ground had one more thing to give up.
In 2004, geologists working for the mining company Rio Tinto found something new in western Serbia’s Jadar Valley: a mineral that exists nowhere else on Earth. They named it jadarite. Reserve found. Billions were committed to bringing it out of the ground. Then, in late 2025, Rio Tinto quietly shelved the whole project, placing it into care and maintenance after years of permitting delays and local protest. Two years after the discovery, a Superman film gave its fictional kryptonite a chemical formula for a prop label, sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide, and a mineralogist at London’s Natural History Museum noticed it was almost exactly jadarite’s own. The film’s writers had no way of knowing the mineral existed. Some who’ve looked at it since have called the coincidence uncanny. It’s a quiet reminder that mercury always has a trick up his sleeve, and that he has always watched over Serbian land and commerce from the rooftops.
