Tesla’s Arc Revolution and the Mud Machine?

Separating Tesla's documented chemistry from what the Mudflood theory extrapolates from it.

-

Nikola Tesla, among the most inventive minds of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, spent years developing technologies for high-voltage electric arcs and atmospheric energy extraction. Several of his patents describe processes for ionizing atmospheric gases to produce nitrogen compounds. Read alongside Mudflood theory, these patents raise a question worth setting out carefully: separating what Tesla’s own documents establish from what remains speculation.

High-Voltage Arc Process

The copper ball at the top of the telescoping tower is the terminal of his huge magnifying transmitter. Tesla’s electric arc process uses high-voltage currents to ionize atmospheric nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2). The resulting nitrogen oxides (NOx) dissolve in water to form nitric acid (HNO3), which, when neutralized with a base, produces nitrates, the compounds at the foundation of most nitrogen fertilizers.

The chemistry is documented and uncontroversial:

N2 + O2 = 2NO

2NO + O2 = 2NO2

NO2 + H2O = HNO3 + NO

Neutralizing the resulting nitric acid with calcium hydroxide yields calcium nitrate, a fertilizer compound still in agricultural use:

HNO3 + Ca(OH)2 = Ca(NO3)2 + 2H2O

This much sits in the direct sourced evidence category. Tesla’s patents describe real chemistry, and industrial nitrogen fixation using electric arcs (the Birkeland-Eyde process, developed independently in Norway in the same period) confirms the method works at scale.

Atmospheric Energy Extraction

Tesla proposed a second, more speculative element:

high-altitude towers designed to draw electrical potential directly from the atmosphere, using the ionosphere as a power source for the arc process rather than conventional generation. Conductors extending into the upper atmosphere would, in this design, collect charge and channel it to the arcs below.

This piece belongs in a different evidentiary category. Tesla’s writings describe the concept and his patents cover apparatus for generating and regulating high-frequency currents, but no surviving document from Tesla demonstrates a working atmospheric extraction tower at the scale being discussed here. This is modelled and inferred territory, built from Tesla’s stated ambitions rather than surviving test results.

Tesla’s Patents

  • U.S. Patent No. 568,176 “Method of Regulating Apparatus for Producing Electric Currents of High Frequency” (1896): covers apparatus for producing high-frequency currents, foundational to the ionization work.
  • U.S. Patent No. 685,012, “Means for Generating Electric Currents” (1901): describes current-generation methods applicable to high-voltage processes generally.
  • U.S. Patent No. 685,957, “Apparatus for the Production of Ozone” (1901): focused on ozone, but the discharge method described is the same one relevant to nitrogen ionization.
  • U.S. Patent No. 1,119,732, “Apparatus for Producing Nitrogen Compounds” (1914): the most directly relevant patent, detailing high-frequency, high-potential currents used to ionize atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen into nitric acid and related compounds.

Where Mudflood Theory Enters

Tartaria Britannica, Canada, 2024

Here the record ends and the theory begins. Mudflood researchers have proposed that large-scale atmospheric ionization, if pushed beyond fertilizer production, could in principle generate far larger volumes of nutrient-rich sediment than anything in the documented agricultural application. Nothing in Tesla’s patents describes this outcome, and no primary source confirms it was ever attempted. This sits squarely in unverified but unchallenged territory: a technically plausible extrapolation from real chemistry, without documentary support one way or the other.

It’s worth being precise about the shape of the claim. The chemistry above genuinely converts atmospheric nitrogen into compounds usable in fertilizer and, by extension, soil enrichment. Whether that process could be scaled to the volumes required to explain the sediment layers cited in Mudflood theory is a separate and much larger claim, one we leave open in the absence of evidence either way.

The documented chemistry has clear agricultural value. Nitrates combined with soil components improve fertility and support crop yields, and arc-based nitrogen fixation offered, in Tesla’s era, a possible alternative to mineral-based fertilizer sources.

Environmental and Geopolitical Implications

Any technology capable of large-scale nitrogen fixation carries risk if scaled carelessly. Uncontrolled production could mean waterway pollution and soil degradation, and control over fertilizer production at a civilizational scale would carry obvious geopolitical weight, whoever held it. Pushed further, the same process could in theory produce mudflood events at a localized scale, though nothing in the historical record confirms this was ever attempted, nor should we expect it to. But if the possibility exists, we cannot fully rule it out, for the true history is always wilder than the written record.

Given the context of Mudflood theory, it’s worth asking whether technology of this kind, deployed at a scale beyond anything in the surviving record, could have contributed to the mud events the theory describes. The surviving patents do not answer that question. They establish that the underlying chemistry works and that Tesla believed atmospheric-scale extraction was possible. What was actually built, and at what scale, remains outside the documentary record.
