Stability is a modern obsession. Growth should continue, disruption should be managed, and systems with sufficient intervention ought to trend toward equilibrium. These assumptions are so embedded in contemporary thinking, economics, ecology, medicine, and governance, that they rarely get examined. They are treated as descriptions of how things work rather than as preferences imposed upon it.
The realm does not share them.
At every scale at which the natural world can be observed, from the twice-daily rhythm of the tide to the slow reset of a forest after fire, the pattern is the same. Expansion generates pressure. Accumulation demands release. What looks like disruption from inside a single human lifetime is, at the scale the realm actually operates on, ordinary function. The cycle corrects because that is what cycles do.
The desire to stabilise a dynamic system is not stewardship. It is the imposition of a human preference onto a process that predates humanity by orders of magnitude and will continue long after. Every intervention that attempts to hold one phase of a cycle in place permanently is working against the very thing it claims to manage. The realm tolerates this for a time. Then it corrects anyway.
The King on the Beach

In 1016, Canute, king of England, Denmark, and Norway, had his throne carried to the shoreline and commanded the tide not to come in. He knew exactly what would happen. The demonstration was staged for his courtiers, who had been flattering him with claims of limitless power, and the tide made his argument for him: that secular power is vain compared to the supreme power of God. It rose around the throne, soaked his robes, and completed its cycle exactly as it had the day before and would the day after.
The tide has never failed to come in. Twice a day, without exception, the water advances and retreats along every coastline, indifferent to what has been built there or what any authority has decided it would prefer. It completed this cycle before the first human settlement was built on any shore. It will complete it after the last one is gone. Other cycles are less visible but no less certain.
The Brake Built Into the System

Somewhere in the boreal forests of northern Canada, a population is collapsing. Not from disease, not from predation alone, not from any single cause that can be pointed to and named. The snowshoe hare, whose numbers have been rising for years across millions of acres of spruce and fir, is beginning to decline. The process is already well underway, following a logic entirely its own.
This cycle has been documented in the fur-trade records of the Hudson’s Bay Company, which logged hare and lynx pelts across the northern territories from 1845 to 1935. What those records reveal is not chaos but rhythm: a near-perfect oscillation repeating on a nine-to-eleven year pulse. Predator and prey populations rise and fall together across generations of animals with no knowledge of the pattern at all.
At peak density, hare populations do not simply wait to be eaten, something else occurs first. Stress hormones rise across the population as crowding intensifies. Reproduction begins to suppress itself, with fewer offspring and higher mortality among the young, before predation pressure has time to do the same work. Growth carries within it the conditions for its own arrest.
The lynx follow the hare downward, their numbers declining a season or two behind. Vegetation recovers. Then the cycle begins again, as it has been beginning again since long before anyone was watching. The same logic operates across longer spans of time.
The Seed Beneath the Ash

In the interior ranges of North America, the lodgepole pine grows in vast dense stands, its canopy closing over time until light barely reaches the forest floor. Deadwood accumulates beneath, and nutrients lock into decaying material rather than cycling back into the soil. Given enough time, the forest stops renewing itself entirely.
Lodgepole pine cones are serotinous, meaning they remain sealed until exposed to sufficient heat. Sustained heat melts the resin and releases the seeds inside. In the absence of fire, those cones may remain sealed for decades. The seeds they contain do not germinate, and the next generation of trees does not begin.
Fire changes this. When flame moves through a stalled forest, the resin melts. Seeds fall onto cleared ground, mineral-rich, open to light, free of the competition that would otherwise overwhelm a seedling. Germination follows rapidly, and what looked like destruction reveals itself as preparation.
Jack pine forests operate under the same principle. Like the lodgepole, the jack pine is a fire-climax species: its reproductive strategy assumes fire as a regular feature of its environment, not an interruption of it. The jack pine arrived at the same solution by a different path, or perhaps drew from the same source, older than either species.
What the Cycles Share

Three mechanisms, three scales: a tide completing its cycle in hours, a hare population collapsing across years, a forest resetting across centuries. What lies beneath them is the same. Accumulation generates pressure. Pressure generates release. The release is not the end of the system but the condition for its continuation. Stability is always provisional, a phase within a cycle, not its destination. The realm does not reward any state with permanence.
This is not a lesson the realm teaches gently. The tide does not wait for permission to rise. The hare population does not ask before it collapses. The lodgepole pine does not negotiate with fire. Each is doing what the cycle requires, indifferent to whether what came before it had considered itself permanent.
The question is not whether the cycle will correct. It always does. The question is whether what a civilisation builds is designed with that knowledge, or against it.
