Hair Intuition: The Signal in the Strand

What our hair remembers—even when we don’t.

-

We often treat hair as surface-level—something to style, colour, or cut without a second thought. But what if it’s more than that?

Hair is so much more than just protein and melanin. Each strand is a tiny chronicle of every emotional, hormonal, and nutritional experience.

In modern Western culture, while we may not consciously understand the spiritual impact of how, and who, we choose to do our hair, it’s still a significant energy exchange. In shamanic practice, there is a ceremony called a cutting of cords: a release of old energies, patterns, beliefs, and connections.

Hair intutition

After certain events in life, we often feel the urge to cut our hair. You might think of regular salon visits as trend-chasing or vanity, but that’s not always the case, say the shamans.

During the Vietnam War, the United States military recruited Native American trackers and scouts. It’s said that something remarkable happened. Whatever talents and skills they had possessed on the reservation seemed to mysteriously vanish, as recruit after recruit failed to perform as expected in the field.

When questioned about their sudden drop in performance, the older recruits consistently explained that once they received the required military haircuts, they could no longer sense the enemy.

They could no longer access their sixth sense. Their intuition was dulled. They couldn’t read subtle signs the way they once could. According to the Natives, hair is an extension of the nervous system—a kind of highly evolved feeler or antenna that transmits vital information to the brain stem, the limbic system, and the neocortex.

In older times, everyone wore their hair long. Maybe it’s not just about appearance. Maybe when we cut or grow our hair, we’re doing something far deeper—responding to change, releasing something old, or tuning back in to a forgotten sense.
