In a cave in southern Germany, in 2008, archaeologists working in Hohle Fels recovered what is among the oldest known musical instruments on earth. Carved from the wing bone of a griffon vulture, pierced with five finger holes, it is dated to roughly 42,000 years ago. Before settled agriculture, before written language, a human being sat down and shaped a bird’s bone into a flute.
The obvious reading is that our ancestors loved music and improvised to make it. Another reading suggests something more specific. The oldest instrument humanity made was fashioned from a bird, tuned to mimic what birds do naturally, and played in a cave where its resonance would have been at its most enveloping. The question worth sitting with is whether that was aesthetic preference or something closer to a healing prescription.
The Doves of Dodona

The oldest oracle in Greece was at Dodona, in the mountainous region of Epirus, and it predates the marble temples and the Pythia at Delphi by centuries. Homer attests it in both the Iliad and the Odyssey. Herodotus visited it in person in the fifth century BCE and recorded that its founding priestesses had been brought from Egyptian Thebes by Phoenician traders, placing the tradition’s roots in Africa before it reached European soil. The priestesses at Dodona were called the Peleiades, the Doves. Their method of divination was sustained acoustic attunement, listening with practiced attention to the calls of birds, the movement of wind, and the sound of leaves in the sacred oak grove. Divine communication, in this tradition, arrived through the natural soundscape rather than through altered states or animal entrails. The ear was the instrument, and the birds were what it was tuned to.
Further west, the Celtic traditions of Ireland and Wales carry the same understanding into a different landscape. In both mythologies, birdsong marks the threshold between the ordinary world and what lies beyond it. The blackbird sings from the branches of sacred trees. The birds of Rhiannon, in the Mabinogi, sing the living to sleep and the dead back to wakefulness. Birdsong heals, enchants, and opens passage. Across the Celtic record, the acoustic world is the channel through which knowledge that cannot be reached by ordinary means becomes available.
From Epirus to the Irish coast, across traditions with no documented connection to one another, birds occupy the same structural position: the threshold of whatever lies beyond ordinary perception.
Thirty Birds, One Voice

In 1177, the Persian Sufi poet Farid ud-Din Attar completed Mantiq al-Tayr, the Conference of the Birds. Thirty birds undertake a journey across seven valleys in search of the Simorgh (si morgh in Persian, meaning thirty birds), a mythical king. When they arrive, they find that they themselves are what they were looking for. The seeker and the sought are not separate. Attar’s argument, woven through allegory without softening its precision, is that the path toward union with the divine proceeds through collective song—the self not destroyed but dissolved into something larger. The birds do not simply represent the soul’s journey. Their singing together is the method.
In the Rhineland, within decades of Attar’s poem, Hildegard von Bingen was making an argument that sounds, across the gulf of language and tradition, remarkably similar. Her understanding of music as medicine was not metaphor. Harmony, in her framework, is what alignment feels like from the inside. A body in proportion, a community in right relation, a soul oriented toward what is true: the result, she argued, is something like music. The world was already producing this before human composition existed. Attar and Hildegard, writing from opposite ends of the medieval world, were pointing at the same phenomenon.
The Safety Signal

In 2022, researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf published a randomised experiment in Scientific Reports. Two hundred and ninety-five participants were exposed to six minutes of either traffic noise or birdsong, including conditions of low and high acoustic diversity in each. The birdsong produced measurable reductions in anxiety. The traffic noise produced a medium effect size increase in depression. Crucially, the experiment was conducted online, not outdoors. Participants listened through their computers. The body did not need to be in nature to respond to the acoustic signal nature produces. The response was already there, waiting to be activated.
That finding builds on earlier work by Eleanor Ratcliffe and colleagues at the University of Surrey, published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology in 2013, which established birdsong as the natural sound most consistently associated with stress recovery and attention restoration across participants. Birdsong functions as an acoustic signal of environmental safety, redirecting attention away from threat-processing and toward a state in which the parasympathetic nervous system can take over. The body responds to birdsong the same way it has for 200,000 years. Singing birds meant no predators were near. The world was intact. Rest was possible.
Modern neuroscience describes this in terms of alpha wave activity. The acoustic frequency range typical of most songbirds, roughly 1,000 to 8,000 Hz, corresponds to the brain states associated with relaxed alertness. Meditators spend years learning to access this range. The dawn chorus offers it without instruction. Research into plant acoustics has shown that sound frequencies in the birdsong range cause stomata to open, widening the breathing pores of leaves and accelerating photosynthesis. The signal birdsong carries is not addressed to human beings alone. The entire living world is tuned to receive it.
The Gap in the Sky

The question, then, is what happens when the signal stops.
In 2019, a study published in Science by Kenneth Rosenberg and colleagues at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology calculated that North America had lost 2.9 billion birds since 1970, a decline of 29 percent across 529 species. Common birds, backyard birds, the sparrows and warblers most people grew up hearing, had disappeared in their hundreds of millions. Europe had been tracking a parallel collapse: roughly 600 million birds lost from the continent since 1980, with farmland species hit hardest. Together the figures describe a transformation of the acoustic environment that has no precedent in recorded human history.
The same decades that produced these losses also produced the modern pharmaceutical infrastructure for treating anxiety, depression, insomnia, and stress-related illness. Benzodiazepines were introduced in the 1960s. SSRI prescriptions accelerated through the 1980s and 1990s. Anxiety disorders had become, by the early 2000s, the most commonly diagnosed mental health condition in the Western world.
No causal claim is required. The correlation is its own kind of record: a species that had spent 200,000 years calibrating its nervous system against the acoustic output of birds began, within a single human lifetime, to lose both the birds and the equilibrium their presence had maintained. The trees felt it too. What the Peleiadesat Dodona were listening for, what Attar’s thirty birds enacted in song, what the carver of the Hohle Fels flute was reaching toward in the dark of that cave, the body is still reaching for. The skies have simply become quieter.
